Prayer of John the Baptist
Looking again at traditions of John the Baptist, I came across two versions of the Prayer of John the Baptist in a few Syriac manuscripts. Does anyone know anything about this? (oh, I will look into it further, but I thought I'd post on it regardless). Here it is:
Longer version:
Now, the first prayer of John to his disciples: “Father, show me your son. Son, show me your spirit. Holy Spirit grant me wisdom through your strength.” And some say it is this: “Holy Father, consecrate me through your strength and make known the glory of your excellence and show me your son and fill me with your spirit which has received light through your knowledge."
Shorter version:
The first prayer of St. John the Baptist to his disciples: "Holy Father, guard your strength and show us your glory and make your son known to us and fill us, my Lord, with your spirit which gives light through your knowledge."
I’m glad Mark Goodacre pointed out that your blog had moved. It has been missed!
I’d like to hear more about this, since there is a Mandaic manuscript of “Prayers of John” in the Bodleian Library. If there is any overlap or indication of interaction or dependence, that could be very useful for tracing the history of Christian and Mandaean interactions.
Back to this topic again as I gear up for my sabbatical focused on John the Baptist. I’m aware of Mingana 564 and the British Museum manuscript that Mingana discusses in Woodbrooke Studies vol.1. Since you said “a few” rather than “a couple” I thought I’d ask whether you’ve come across versions of this anywhere else. Thanks in advance for replying to a comment on a blog post from 12 years ago!
Hi James, y’know, you could have just emailed me! No, I don’t know of any others, but I haven’t actively looked.
where do you find this in the Bible?
what difference does it make at this point about where you get your information from because it can just be said ‘fake news’!!!!!! MY QUESTION IS SIMPLY IS JESUS CHRIST LORD OF ALL?
Can you tell me what John meant when he said “Holy Father, guard Your strength!”?

I like it, whoever our father is now on the top of it , but it’s reasonable , guard your strength…. For me it means .. strength your Holy Spirit ( our strength source) in us … to know you more and so..
Regardless to certain or uncertain source of it … it’s not in the Bible .. may be from Jewish tradition ..
I am really happy and surprised to see the prayer given by John the Baptist to his disciples. I thank fr. Milton and Fr. Kennedy for sharing these beautiful msg. I will pray for both the priests.
It’s really good message to society that every good person teaches about good prayer . This prayer has mentioned all three spirits, father, son and Holy spirit. By this prayer only Jesus desciples motivated to learn about prayer and we are benefited by this Lord’s prayer taught by Jesus. All glory goes to our almighty God and savior Jesus Christ.
Could you tell me in which manuscripts you found these?
